PEBBLE BEACH (KCBS) – The most popular pro-am pairings will be playing Spyglass Hill Thursday in the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
“I don’t really follow the key pairings, because that’s where everyone else goes,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. “It’s so crowded you can’t get close to them…I go to Pebble every day…I kind of hang out at the (CBS) compound, because they always have food and beverage.”
Madden said he also visits the Pebble Beach maintenance shed.
“They barbecue down there and make chili,” he said. “The guy has the best chili, I swear.”
John saw 49er coach Jim Harbaugh play Wednesday.
“For a guy that grinds in football the way he does, he has a pretty good game,” the former coach said. “I’m still surprised that (Patriots coach) Bill Belichick is playing in this. He was here two days after the Super Bowl.”
In NFL news, Baltimore Ravens running back Ricky Williams announced he is retiring after 11 seasons on three teams and more than 10,000 rushing yards.
“He did it quietly,” Madden said. “He was one of those guys you always expected more out of…I’ve always liked him and known him to be good guy. Kind of quiet, maybe a little different… he accumulated a lot of yards, but because he moved around it was kind of quietly.” (7:45)
